FEATURED FAN MEMORY

Many years ago when I had the pleasure to present Liv the first time at Wilmington Delaware’s Grand Opera House, he agreed to help with a radio promotion. The winner of the radio station contest received a pair of tickets to Liv’s concert and dinner with him before the show.

My wife and I went along to make sure all went well and to be ready to extricate Liv in case the fan was a nut. We all arrived at the restaurant and sat down. Liv, Kathy and I started chatting while the fan and his wife remained mute and appeared socially uncomfortable.

Liv turned to the guy and said, “So, Bob, what do you do for a living?” Long pause and Bob, with eyes downcast, mutters “I operate a dredge.” And says nothing more.

Without missing a beat, Liv lights up like a Christmas tree and says something like “Wow, that is so cool! Is it a mechanical or hydraulic dredge?” Bob’s head snaps up, a smile lights up his face and he proudly says “It’s a ten ton hydraulic 527 dredge.” (I’m making up these specifics because I had no clue what they were talking about). “Amazing” says Liv, “Does it have the outriggers and overhead lifters...” and we were off to the races. Bob and Liv were deep into gearhead minutiae through the rest of the dinner. Liv regaled us with details of his whole house vacuum system and more as they traded tech talk.

In addition to making a fan for life, Bob has probably never again been shy about his work because of the kind and genuine way in which Liv engaged him.

It’s one of the moments in a 40 year career as an arts presenter that I will always remember because of the sincerity and humanity of this star performer who could have dismissed the whole event as a pain in the butt. He instead first made this man, and then a whole theater of people happy to be in his presence.

Mr. Taylor, I’m proud to have known you. I subsequently got to know Kate and James, but my introduction to the Taylor family through you was the BEST! - David Fleming

QUOTE OF THE MOMENT

Five decades of playing music have taught Livingston two main things:

"First, that life isn't about you, it's always about them. Can you make others brighter, smarter, better? And then, for all you creators out there... you have to watch your creativity land. You have to see what effect it's having on people." - masslive.com, January 2018
